Authentic Love

This True Love Waits study exposes culture’s distorted messages about purity and love and reveals how God has created us for a lifestyle of personal holiness. Through these two partner studies, both girls and guys are challenged to reject the self-serving influences of culture and embrace what it means to live as godly young men and women who reflect the character of Christ.

This study presented a unique set of opportunities and challenges: one title for one kit containing two partnering bible studies. Two designs needed to be created for these two studies illustrating the voices of two different authors teaching one message to two different audiences.

These designs needed a flexible common ground, something that united them but could also vary enough to reflect two voices (Amy-Jo’s and D.A.’s) and two audiences (girls and guys) in the design.

I knew from the start that this design would mainly need to focus on the type. Amy-Jo was raised and currently works in the suburbs, D.A. in the inner city. The author’s different tones fit our two audiences perfectly; girls tend to be more attracted to lighter designs with fun details while guys tend to be drawn to more minimal, often urban designs. I ran with those differences and focused on creating imagery within the type that reflected them.

I created similarities where I could: the same gender-neutral font for the author’s name and the subtitle, the same color blue used on both studies, similar architectural backgrounds on both covers (although Amy-Jo’s is light and airy while D.A.’s is more dark and minimal). Beyond that, I had fun contrasting these author’s differences within the type.
