To God Alone

To God Alone

This study was first published exactly 500 years after Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther’s Theses called for reform of the church and served as the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. The study examines the five core truths that came out of the Reformation, now referred to as the solas:

  • Sola Scriptura (By Scripture alone)

  • Sola gratia (By grace alone)

  • Sola fide (Through faith alone)

  • Solus Christus (Through Christ alone)

  • Soli Deo gloria (Glory to God alone).

Because of the historical aspect of this study, we wanted the imagery to look historic but not dated or unappealing to students. We needed to use a design trend that was historic but coming back. A trend like letterpress.

One of my favorite design shops in Nashville is Hatch Show Print, a historic letterpress shop from 1879 that still cranks out letterpress posters for all of Nashville. I designed this cover as a nod to shops like Hatch Show, mimicking the old-school letterpress style on modern technology.
